George's Scrapbook

George's Family    Jessie and George- 50th Anniversary

My grandfather, George A. Scheivelhud, was born in 1881 in Plymouth, Indiana,
son of Joseph Scheibelhut and Elizabeth Kratz. Joseph's father Augustus was born in Germany and settled in Pa. for a time, as Joseph was born there.
Joseph moved the family to the Chattanooga area in the early 1890s, then went back to Indiana.
George and his brother Charley soon returned, changed their names to Scheivelhud and Schievelhud respectively, and stayed. I always thought he was less than thorough in his name changing phase.
George was found living in a boarding house in Rossville in the 1900 Walker County census. He married Jesse Thomason, a local beauty, in 1905 in Rossville. They later lived, and raised a large family in several Tennessee and Georgia areas, primarily Chickamauga in my lifetime.
He was interested in politics and people and religion, and kept a scrap book during the war years, which is shared here. The people represented are relatives, friends or people of some importance to the family.
I wish he was here to tell you about them. Most are self explanatory and will give insight into the times, the worries and joys of the era. I grew up at his feet listening to tales I did not write down, much to my current regret. He still speaks to me with these pages...
